New family attractions to visit around Birmingham, the Black Country and Worcestershire in 2022

There are plenty of new attractions and events planned for families around Birmingham and the Black Country in 2022.

You will be able to walk through some of the animal reserves at West Midland Safari Park for the first time, there will be three new CBeebies attractions at Alton Towers, a new amusement ride at Drayton Manor and new live shows at Cadbury World.

An illuminated trail is being set up in Compton Verney, Dudley Zoo is getting new animal enclosures and the UK’s first permanent immersive digital art gallery is opening in Coventry.

The Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery reopens for the first time in almost two years, and Shakespeare’s Birthplace Trust is expanding and improving its season for 2022.

New animal reserves at West Midland Safari Park

West Midland Safari Park is set to install new trails so guests can visit giraffes, cheetahs, rhinos and African elephants on foot – for the first time in the park’s 48-year history .

New areas of the park will also open as well as eight new Safari Lodges where you can stay overnight and enjoy spectacular views of the park’s giraffes and white rhinos, the latter being the only experience of its kind in the UK. The giraffe lodges will have balconies, allowing customers to come face to face with these magnificent creatures.

Plans are also submitted for four more lodges, immersed in a brand new Sumatran tiger exhibit. Ground-level accommodation will be integrated into the newly constructed tiger habitat, promising an “immersive encounter with wildlife like no other”.

A new red panda is also expected to arrive in the park – a male companion for Mei Lin, a female who arrived in August 2021. Both will be part of a European Endangered Species Breeding Program (EEP), which aims to help to keep the numbers of red pandas. Learn more and book here

Three new CBeebies attractions at Alton Towers

The Alton Towers complex has announced the opening of three new attractions at CBeebies Land in 2022, each themed with individual shows – Hey Duggee, JoJo & Gran Gran and Andy’s Adventures.

Young guests can climb, slide and bounce through the Hey Duggee Big Adventure Badge, the new adventure playground, where they will meet Hey Duggee every day and collect their own Big Adventure Badge while enjoying a new one. live show called The Map Badge.

Jojo & Gran Gran At Home fans will have fun exploring Gran Gran’s home from the hit TV animated show and there’s also a new live interactive attraction, Andy’s Adventures Dinosaur Dig.

Light Show at Compton Verney

Compton Verney has a new visitor experience for 2022 which will see the famous Lancelot Capability Brown landscaped and wooded park transformed by a series of light installations, creating an illuminated trail under the stars.

Spectacle of Light invites you on an illuminated journey from the Visitor Center, through the woods, along the lake and across the bridge to see the house bathed in light.

There will be a changing light curve, a colored carpet on the main lawn and sparkling light beams across the lake with music at each show with hot chocolate and treats as well.

Freddo’s Festival of Fun at Cadbury World

Cadbury World is launching a series of all-new, exclusive stage shows featuring beloved Cadbury characters throughout 2022.

To celebrate Easter, Freddo will star in a new stage show where the Caramel Bunny will challenge him with a series of challenges to receive a mystery prize – with lots of help from the audience.

Throughout the summer, visitors can also enjoy Freddo’s Festival of Fun, where Freddo will take audiences on a musical journey through the world of pop, country and rock in another new show.

Food experiences with characters will also be back on the menu on certain dates.

The Reel Store digital art gallery

The UK’s first permanent immersive digital art gallery opens in Coventry as part of the City of Culture.

The Reel Store will open in the old Coventry Telegraph building in spring 2022, becoming a new permanent attraction for visitors to the heart of the city.

This new state-of-the-art space will feature innovative experiential art commissions with the main exhibition space spanning some 800 m2 of fixed projection map canvas with 14 4K laser projectors accompanied by an adaptive audio system. in the space.

Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery reopens

The Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery is set to reopen in April after nearly two years of closure.

The Chamberlain Square attraction will feature some of Brum’s most exciting designers taking possession of the Round Room and Industrial Gallery.

The Edwardian tearooms and BMAG boutique will also reopen with Gallery 10 and Gallery Bridge, but the rest of the museum will remain closed while work continues through 2023/4.

2022 is set to be an exciting year for Dudley Zoo as it celebrates its 85th anniversary.

A new outdoor enclosure for orangutans is due to open at Easter and there will be a new walkway for visitors and an observation area above a new enclosure for giraffes in the summer.

Later this year, the Tiger Enclosure will be expanded to include a new swimming pool and stream, as well as a climbing frame and additional platforms. A new indoor tiger house will also be built to include visitor viewing and off-show dens.

Extended season at the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust

The Shakespeare Birthplace Trust has announced an extended season for 2022 with more opportunities for visitors to enjoy the Shakespeare family homes in Stratford-upon-Avon.

Shakespeare’s Birthplace, the childhood home of world-renowned playwright William Shakespeare, will reopen from February 5 after a brief winter shutdown (January 5 – February 4, 2022) to allow essential conservation and maintenance. It will then remain open all year round.

Anne Hathaway’s Cottage and Shakespeare’s New Place will reopen to visitors for a longer season in 2022, from March 26 to October 30. The Trust is also extending the opening hours of the three sites to seven days a week, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Trust is also planning a wider program of outdoor activities for families and special events at all five homes during the year, with more details to be announced in the New Year. Learn more here
